Background Needed

First and foremost, people considering going into the agricultural teaching field should have an open mind, an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to ask for and accept help. Every community, school district, and group of students is different, so being open-minded about their wants and needs is important. Do not be afraid to teach a course or train a team just because you have not done it before. Use the networks available to you. Because the amount of required knowledge is so vast, there is no way one person can know everything, but there is a strong network of ASTs across the country who are successful in individual areas and willing to help those who ask.

It is usually helpful for future ASTs to have taken some agricultural science courses while in high school and to have been involved in their local FFA chapter, but many extremely successful ASTs do not come from agricultural and FFA backgrounds. Not every school offers agricultural education courses or has a successful FFA chapter. Furthermore, some great ASTs are former agricultural students who watched those in other schools have opportunities that were never offered by their local FFA chapter. Future ASTs lacking high school opportunities should spend extra hours observing successful teachers and chapters. Volunteering to judge competitions, helping to train teams, assisting with local project shows, taking advantage of internships, and lending a hand at local school functions while attending college help young teachers gain useful experiences and make contacts that could be valuable when trying to secure an agricultural teaching position. Due to the fact that ASTs should be diversified in their agricultural knowledge, have a strong background in educational theory and application, and have sound student teaching skills, please pay close attention to the listed educational requirements.
